Susan Burk is an independent consultant specializing on issues related to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, in all aspects. She is a retired Senior Executive with 35 years’ experience, whose last position was as the Special Representative of the President (Obama) for Nuclear Non-proliferation, with the rank of Ambassador.

She is a retired Senior Executive whose last position was as the Special Representative of the President (Obama) for Nuclear Non-proliferation, with the rank of Ambassador. In that position, she led the U.S. delegation in the successful 2010 NPT Review Conference, and spearheaded renewed efforts to advance establishment of nuclear weapon free zone treaties in Southeast and Central Asia. Throughout her government career, Burk worked to advance the U.S. Government’s non-proliferation, arms control and counterterrorism agendas in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and the Department of State. She served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Non-proliferation Controls, and as Acting Assistant Secretary of the State Department’s Non-proliferation Bureau. Prior to this assignment, she served as the first State Department Deputy Coordinator for Homeland Security in the Department’s Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism.   

Burk currently serves on the Boards of the Herbert P. Scoville Peace Fellowship Program, the Arms Control Association, the Center for Arms Control and Non-proliferation, and the Center of Concern. She is a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy.       

Burk is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Trinity College, Washington, D.C., where she earned her B.A., and of Georgetown University, where she earned her M.A.
